What I’ve been up to…

In short: writing/editing

I’m really happy with how work on my newest series is coming. I managed to finish the first draft of Book 3 in May (before my kids were home for summer). In current fashion, as I started Book 3, I had several realizations about the series as a whole. I had updates to make to Book 1 and a restructuring of Book 4. This is why I like to write first drafts of all books before I submit an edited Book 1 to publishers for consideration. I need to know the whole story.

I took a little bit of a break and have jumped back into writing. My goal is to finish Book 4 by the end of July. I have to find time here and there, so I’m giving myself grace with a lot of weeks to write. I’d like to edit Book 1 and submit it to publishers this fall.

I have another fresh idea I’d like to write this fall with the idea of submitting to publishers in the winter/spring of 2026.

AND: I’m trying to decide what to do about my Christian romantic suspense. It’s a story that I really love but had too much of a mystery element for Love Inspired Suspense. This is a story I first conjured up for Anaiah Press. I remain heartbroken about their closing. I LOVED my editor there (and PS you can work with her if you want! https://www.karaleighmillerauthor.com/crazy-cat-corrections.html)

It’s a standalone book so I’m not sure if other publishers would be interested or if they’d prefer I had at least a few other books to “sort of” package together. I have a few edits I’d like to make before I submit (something came to me). Being an author is equal parts creative and business. This is a put on my business hat moment. Might be a self-publishing moment. STAY TUNED.

What I mean by “heart-felt, hope-filled” romance…

It’s been a while since I’ve posted. Yikes! All I can say is that May is always busy. Maybe next year, when my oldest is a licensed driver (gulp), I won’t spend so much time running around. (probably not)

Anyways. I was walking the other day, dictating on my current WIP (work in progress), and kept thinking about my author tagline: Hope-filled, Heart-felt romance.

My books have a lot of “tropes” (fake amnesia, fake dating, grumpy sunshine, etc.) but the core story to every novel I write, from the sillier more shenanigans based stories to the really touching, is that there is always a second chance. Every day is a fresh start to go after your dreams.

I’m currently working on a book with a main character that feels like they’ve missed their moment. They are trying to find contentment but something is really nagging them. They have the opportunity now but are scared of failure.

I think this setup is pretty universal. I’ve had moments like this about my writing. I used to joke that I did everything backwards in this business (and it is true to a certain extent). But what I didn’t appreciate is the freedom and terror of knowing that every project is a fresh start.

I had a book on submission that received an r&r recently (revise and resubmit). Ultimately, the book didn’t fit the strict parameters of the publisher, but I was left so pleased by the whole experience. It was a publisher I thought would never consider my work. But they did. And I’ll work on another project later this year for another chance with them.

If you read my books, I want you to leave feeling encouraged. It’s something I need, too. You’re only done when you decide. There’s always time to take a chance. And putting yourself out there is worth it!
