Tell us three things we’d find if we looked under your heroine’s bed?
Three things Serena would have under her bed: letters from Booth; her engagement ring (which she had to return to Booth at the start of the war); the family Bible.
How about the hero’s?
Three things Booth would have under his bed: a tintype photo of Serena; a copy of his updated will making Serena his heir; his military sword.
What is the theme of this book? If it’s part of a series, how does this book fit into the
series?
Since this is Inspirational Historical Romance, my characters are all believers, so the trials they
endure help to grow their faith. But beyond that, honor before love plays a big role. In the Civil
War era, people in both the North and the South placed a high value on honor and loyalty at the
cost of personal feelings. Of course, that presents a problem to my hero and heroine, since
they’re on different sides of the conflict. I hope to make this the first book of a series called
“Confederate Brides.”
Why do you write this genre?
I write historical romance because I’m very interested in history and the past. I enjoy researching
the time periods of my stories to find out how society and history would shape their philosophy
and their lives. I love putting my characters into difficult eras, such as Reconstruction in the
South, the Civil War, the untamed West, and then let them navigate the hardships and triumphs
of those times.
Any tips to share with aspiring authors?
There’s a lot of writing advice out there, and some of it’s contradictory—outline your plot vs.
don’t outline; develop your characters so you know them well vs. get to know your characters as
you go; and just write your first draft and don’t edit until then next pass vs. edit as you go are
some contradictory pieces of advice. There’s some truth to all of this, but one thing I’ve learned
is to take what advice works for you and ignore the rest. We all write differently, so find what
works for you and do it.
