The countdown for the national conference for RWA is officially on!

Last year was my very first writer’s conference. Ever. I was so nervous I nearly talked myself out of going. But that was exactly how I knew I NEEDED to attend. I’ve never learned anything from being comfortable. Pushing myself out of my comfort zone is how I started actually pursuing this crazy dream I’ve nurtured since childhood.

In San Diego, I met so many of the amazing people I’ve connected with online who have been instrumental in challenging me to change for the better. I attended workshops and learned so much valuable craft information. I networked. I came home with my passion for telling stories flaming higher than ever before.

And I vowed that whenever I get the chance to head to RWA I will take it. I’ll make the most of every second I have. I’ll let go of my insecurities and keep myself open to new ideas.

 

My excitement level has been climbing steadily since registering back in February. I can’t wait to learn and experience even more this year. In fact, I decided I really can’t wait…like even for my baggage.

I’m going to try what is nearly impossible for me. Traveling with a carry-on size suitcase for the trip. I have never been a light packer. I believe in being prepared (seriously, you should see the trunk of my car on a normal day). But, I think I can do this.

I will be coming home with tons of books, based on last year. My plan is to pack two foldable totes that can be used as checked bags on my return trip. We’ll see if that’s enough…

#5 Jekyll Island Beach

The beach on Jekyll Island (overlooking the St. Simons Island Sound) is just about as perfect as you get. Bordered by dunes and wild grasses, the sand is fine and stretches far out to the sea. I love flying kites with my boys and building sand castles. Our favorite trip to the beach even included an impromptu bbq using the grills near the parking lot for hot dogs and s’mores. Yum!

We always joke that no matter the temperature (too hot, too cold) the weather is perfect at the Jekyll Island Beach. The bright sunshine warms up a too cold day and the breeze off the water cools down a hot and humid August afternoon. Another plus for this beach? Excellent seashell collecting. Parking (and restrooms) conveniently located next to the dunes for an easy afternoon with kids.

#4 Neptune Park

Located on St. Simons Island in the Pier Village, Neptune Park features big ole live oaks, a mini-golf course, and a great public pool. The location of this park is awesome. You can easily walk to the restaurants and shops in the Pier Village. We’ve been known to stop off for a fro-yo and then wander down the pier to watch the tug boats lead the big car carriers through the Sound, or to watch the huge pelicans dive for food.

#3 Summer Waves Water Park

A family friendly water park on Jekyll Island that my kids love. They’ve got slides, two splash zones, a lazy river, and a wave pool. If you’re visiting in August (like my family often does), this is a great time to stop by. Local kids are back in school and the water park isn’t very crowded.

#2 Fort Frederica

A National Park on the north end of St. Simons Island, this is a great spot to visit. The visitor center has a movie that explains the history of the fort (and how St. Simons was settled) and then you can walk out onto the expansive grounds. Ruins from the old fort and houses that were built here still stand, along with the cannons near the marsh’s edge. It’s a beautiful spot with an interesting history.

#1 Saint Simons Lighthouse and Museum

The Lighthouse, owned and operated by the Coastal Georgia Historical Society, is still operational. My family has taken countless photos outside but this summer will be my son’s first trip up to the top. (He’s been asking to go for years and even wrote about it for a school project!) I love the museum store, a great collection of gifts available for purchase.

My kids finished school last week and start day camp in a few days. Once camp starts then summer officially begins.

And I can’t wait.

For the first (and maybe only) summer, they will be together at the same program. Dropping off my two kids in one spot? What rare treat is this? I’m used to driving all over town.

Here’s my summer schedule:

Waking up “early” for the next couple months means 7am (not 6)

Morning walks with my dog before waking the kids

Plenty of time to write during the day (!)

Taking the kids swimming after camp gets out early afternoon

Essentially, I’m excited for seven weeks of work/life balance. And then at the end of camp, we’re heading to visit family for two weeks before we get back to school and our regular schedule.

Pool time, popsicles, plenty of sunshine? Bring it on!
